I saw my first Birman on Burke’s Backyard and instantly fell in love and I knew that I had to make this special breed part of my life.
I bought my first Birman in 1991 and starting breeding under the prefix “Belshogar Birmans” and have since then enjoyed the spell these cats have over me. I strive to breed Birmans of good quality, health and temperament. It has been a passionate hobby and I have great pleasure in raising my babies, watching them develop into little people and then venture off into the world to give joy to someone else.
I am registered with Queensland Feline Association Inc and I am also the Treasurer of the Birman Cat Fancier of Qld Cat Club and involved in our Annual Birman Club Show held in May each year. I am also the Vice President of QFA Inc and recently completed my Longhair Judges Licence.
My husband & I live on acreage in Capalaba, a bayside suburb of Brisbane. I work from home as we also own and manage Capalaba Cat Cottage, a high quality cats only boarding cattery. My cats have lots of room either living in their own separate cattery and garden area with fresh air and sunshine or in my home depending on whether we have babies at the time. I bring my kittens up in my home from birth to when they leave. The reason is so I can have them under toe as they are growing. I try to keep my litters numbers low so I can always achieve this. I cannot see any point in breeding too many babies that have to be brought up in a cattery – it just takes all the fun out of raising kittens.
I stopped breeding in 2003 but after 12 months missed it so much I decided I had to start again. With my previous breeding experience I have been very selective in the stock I have started again with. I have chosen my cats for their temperament, health and Birman type. I do believe I breed for two main reasons – one to improve and strengthen this beautiful breed and to ensure that the kittens that I breed are the standard that I would want for myself in beauty and most importantly temperment.
I predominately breed seal point Birmans, as they are my favourite of all the colours. Even after all these years I find nothing more beautiful than a gorgeous seal point in full glory. The striking colour of the seal with blue eyes and stand out white feet still thrill me the most. The other colours I breed are blue, chocolate and lilac points which are much softer colours. Towards the end of 2010 we hope to have some new colours to Belshogar which will red points and tortie points when our future stud Feanor Judus Rufus grows up and starts to sire some babies. Some of my cats have come from traditional seal/blue lines as I still feel these lines offer the basic of our breed – glorious cats of substance, type, temperament and the easier care coat. I have brought in some outcross cats that do dabble into the chocolate/lilac lines and soon to be red lines to give an outcross and different strengths to my breeding programme.
I hope you enjoy viewing my website, my cats and their achievements and if you are interested in being under the spell like myself please contact me.
